Dear NACCTEP Members,
As we approach the annual NACCTEP national conference in Baltimore, Maryland, I am privileged to report on efforts being made by the Executive Board on behalf of the NACCTEP membership.
Members at Large, Janet Johnson and Art Montiel, represented the Board at the Key Partners for Solutions meeting at the Academy for Educational Development (AED) building in Washington, D.C. The purpose and outcome of the September meeting was to assist the National Migrant & Seasonal Head Start Collaboration Office (NMSHSCO) in brainstorming possible ways to help Migrant/Seasonal Head Start Spanish speaking teachers obtain degrees or credentials they need to fulfill the requirements of the 2007 Head Start Act. This meeting has lead to increased partnership between Head Start and NACCTEP. One outcome is the development of a white paper that NACCTEP has offered to post on its website. In addition, Head Start has been invited to present a breakout session at our Connecting Communities nationalconference.
Cindy Kelley and I will represent NACCTEP at the American Association of Community Colleges annual conference by presenting a breakout session on NACCTEP in Seattle, Washington in April. This is not only a great forum to share information on the Association, but also expose NACCTEP to many national community college leaders. As you may know, NACCTEP is an AACC Affiliate Council
The 2010-2011 scholarship application is now available online. The purpose of the NACCTEP National Scholarship Program is to provide financial assistance to community college students (undergraduate or alternative certification/post-baccalaureate) who are studying to become teachers at a NACCTEP member college. Please encourage your students to apply for these $1,000 scholarships. Applications will be accepted through Friday, April 23, 2010
I encourage you to expand your involvement in the Association by considering running for the Executive Board, which serves on your behalf as a national vehicle for advocacy for community college teacher education programs. The Call for Nominations is now open. Positions open on the 2010-2011 Executive Board are the President Elect, Secretary, and two Member at Large positions. Dr. Virginia Carson is the chair of the Nominations Committee and all requirements are posted on the NACCTEP website at www.nacctep.org. Please feel free to contact any Board member for additional information or call the NACCTEP office.
Another forum for your involvement is submitting articles for the NACCTEP Newsletters. NACCTEP is always looking for articles to spotlight an educational program, student, or resource. Members interested in having their educational program(s) or staff and successes featured should submit information to or contact Pam Asti.
Thank you for your continued support of community college teacher education programs. This is a great time in our country’s history for us to be part of the community college family. Let us take this opportunity to not only bask in the limelight but also inform all who will listen about the good work that we do every day in all of our community colleges. We proudly change lives one at a time. Come celebrate that fact with us in Baltimore. I look forward to networking with each of you at the national conference. It promises to be another stimulating experience.
