Message From The President

Dear NACCTEP Members:

I have noticed education issues mentioned in every nook, cranny, email, magazine and newspaper articles, and conversations. Have you? If you have glanced at the headlines this summer you are fully aware that these are tumultuous times for education, especially for teachers. Opportunities in education for personal growth, global preparation, collaboration, teacher leadership, and responsibilities to support teachers at all levels are everywhere. What innovations, changes, and problem solving techniques are we incorporating into our teacher education programs to improve the overall success of our future teachers? What have we done this summer to prepare for our ever changing world in teacher education?

These important questions, and many others, hopefully continue to drive all teacher educators around the country to be active, involved, and connected. My personal responses to Michigan's problems in education are not necessarily shared by all. By sharing our ideas through NACCTEP, we may help to create new solutions to some very tough issues in education across the country. READ MORE

New Standards, Systems, and Opportunities in Early Childhood Teacher Education
By Alison Lutton, National Association for the Education of Young Children, Washington, DC

During a period in which national and state education policy focuses new attention on the challenge of defining, assessing, and supporting effective teachers, there have been a number of significant revisions to national teacher accreditation systems and standards.

The two national standard setting organizations for early childhood teachers, the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), both revised early childhood teaching standards in 2010. Currently, these organizations are working together on a national standards alignment tool that programs can use to evaluate how well they prepare graduates to grow toward and meet both sets of standards, offering a vision for the development of excellence in early childhood teacher preparation from the associate degree candidate to the accomplished, advanced teacher. Access for Rural America
By Paul M. Holbrook, Coconino Community College, Flagstaff, AZ

Many administrators and faculty members work diligently to improve access to college. Often access is a key concept stated in the community college's mission statement. Access may seem to be straight forward, but I challenge you to rethink how you could still improve assess. With limited resources, college administrators can offer just so many classes and programs. The problems with access may appear to be less profound in the large urban cities where thousands of students may attend college. In Coconino County, the second largest county in the United States, access is a challenge, and thinking of ways to increase access when some residents must travel four hours to get to a campus means you have to implement creative alternatives and strategies for your residents. By M. Jane Franklin, Metropolitan Community College, Omaha, NE
In the fall of 2002, administrators and faculty from Metropolitan Community College, Omaha, NE (MCC), gathered with administrators and faculty from University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) to find a way to create and deliver courses for teacher preparation on-line and to establish a mechanism for advisors from the two institutions to interact with each other electronically. The resultant project, termed Teacher Education at Metro (TE@M), is now in its eighth year and provides pre-professional coursework that students at MCC may take and transfer to UNO to continue preparation to become certified teachers.
