Truckee Meadows Community College
Founded in 1971 in Northern Nevada, Truckee Meadows Community College serves over 12,000 students in for-credit courses and another 7,500 students in continuing education programs each semester. The college offers more than 50 associate degree and certificate programs in a wide variety of academic and occupational programs, from computer networking to diesel technology to nursing. TMCC was founded on and remains committed to the principles of flexibility, cost-effectiveness and open admissions. |

DR. MARIA C. SHEEHAN
President of Truckee Meadows Community College |
Dr. Sheehan’s career in education spans over 35 years. She has served in the capacity of instructor, counselor, and an administrator responsible for student services and instruction. She held the position of Vice Chancellor of Human Resources for the South Orange County Community College District for eight years and as Vice Chancellor for the system office for the California Community Colleges in Sacramento. She then served as President of Modesto Junior College for six years where she is credited with revitalizing the college foundation and securing its single largest gift of three million dollars for a new student center.
Dr. Sheehan was appointed to the position of Superintendent/President of the Desert Community College District in July 2001 where she served until August 2007. Under her leadership and within two and a half years, the College had its first Educational Master Plan and Facilities
Master Plan, and within four years had the most successful campaign in the state leading to the passage of a $346.5 million bond measure. As president emeritus of the Desert Community College District she continued to remain active in community efforts, including facilitating United Way and Rotary projects, and serving as a consultant for the national initiative on student success, Achieving the Dream.
Currently serving as the President of Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno, Nevada, Dr. Sheehan will help the college address unprecedented enrollment growth and fiscal challenges.
Dr. Sheehan’s academic degrees include a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree from California State University at Los Angeles, a Master’s degree from California State University, Long Beach, and a Doctorate degree in Higher Education from Pepperdine University. |
