From a Two-Plus-Two Articulation Agreement to a Global Initiative
This presentation will describe how an articulation agreement between a community college and a public university can grow into a global initiative. Students and faculty from both institutions are involved in an international educational and cultural exchange with students and faculty from Northern Ireland.

Advancing Technological Literacy and Skills (ATLAS) of Elementary Educators
The Museum of Science, Boston with three community colleges and their four-year transfer institutions is developing models that infuse technology and engineering concepts and skills in elementary education preservice programs. This session presents models for engineering and technology integration in science, mathematics, elementary methods, education practicum, and learning community courses.

Future Teachers Discover New Worlds: Inquiry, Projects, and Service Learning Across the Curriculum
This session will focus on a cross-curricular service learning delivery system, EMPACTS, a recent League for Innovations award recipient. This trial-based 12-15 week process promotes development of 21st century skills while creating “deeper learning” of course outcomes including STEM and education courses.

Improving Teacher Candidates’ Certification Test Results

Language Immersion for the Early Childhood Teacher in Training
Students are taught to understand language acquisition as part of the total Early Childhood Education teacher prep coursework. The classroom is transformed into a mock preschool setting where students do not speak the language of the teachers. While participating in the lesson students develop coping strategies which are later analyzed and discussed.

The STEM Workforce Challenge: Addressing the Quiet Crisis of K-12 STEM Education

Female Learners and the Challenges of Online Learning
Women face a unique set of challenges that often direct them toward online learning. However, once in the program they are extremely likely to drop out. This presentation is a literature-based discussion on how online programs can support the female learner. You will come away with a to-do list to make your teaching more effective.

The Future Role of Community Colleges in Training Special Education Paraprofessionals
Currently there are 1.2 million paraprofessionals working in special education classrooms. There are little data available indicating characteristics of students that will be successful in completing training programs in this field. This presentation will examine characteristics, attributes, and support programs that will assure successful completion of a degree program.

The Effects of an Institutional Prerequisite on Student Enrollment at a Two-Year College
This session examines a longitudinal study that looked at the effects of a developmental reading prerequisite on student enrollment and pass/fail rates as compared to previous years where no such prerequisite existed in a teacher education program.

Improving the Local Pipeline; A Unique Pre-Service Teacher Dual Enrollment Partnership in Southern Nevada
STEP-UP is a pre-teacher program for local students who are committed to becoming teachers for Clark County School District (CCSD). During their junior and senior years of high school, participants register for dual enrollment courses meeting the requirements for an Associate of Arts Education Emphasis at the College of Southern Nevada (CSN).

10-9-8: Countdown to Program Improvement Using Assignment Rubric Data
Grading assignments is more than evaluating student work but can be the basis for continuous program improvement. Conferees will see how the analysis of well-constructed rubrics yields not only student performance data, but the alignment of learning outcomes with the standards, the program’s effectiveness, and quantitatively guides program improvement change.

Bringing Four-Year Degrees to Two-Year Campuses
Learn how Normandale Community College used a PUSH approach to maximize student opportunities to earn four-year teaching degrees on its campus. In this session participants will learn the four pillars of the PUSH approach that were put in place to bring three degree programs to campus and to support them when they got there. Participants will also examine their own situations and begin to create their own plan to “PUSH” student opportunities forward.

English Language Learners/Future Educators
Introduction to the English Language Learners/Future Educators (ELLFES) program in which Education majors work with K-12 ELL teachers and students as part of their observation experience. Future teachers are introduced to a population they seldom know about, and non-native English speakers receive more assistance than the districts can provide.

An Integrated Teacher Education Program Based on Standards
When Century College decided to introduce a teacher education program, the integration of standards formed the framework. Century College offers an Associate in Science Degree in Education that integrates alignment of INTASC standards in every class, requires service learning specific to course objectives, and culminates in a required professional electronic portfolio.

Life's Lessons Learned from the Three Little Pigs
The focus of this P-3 grade unit is the life’s lessons that are provided through the various interpretations of The Three Little Pigs. Presenters will demonstrate and share examples of activities covering seven “Life’s Lessons”, which include: Architecture, Manners, Health, Family, Money Matters, Stereotyping, Bad Behavior and Multi-Cultural Influences. These activities will include tradebooks, web links, and technology software incorporations.

Online Teacher Education Partnerships: Opening the Door to Higher Education
Information on how Rio Salado’s Online Teacher Education courses and general education requirements along with Northcentral University’s Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree completing course work, apply toward Elementary, Secondary, Special Education, and Early Childhood Certification. These transfer partnership degrees have large enrollments with students residing in 48 states and more than 33 countries.

Integrating Art Across the Teacher Education Curriculum
This hands on workshop will demonstrate the power of art and visual learning in teacher education. The visual arts are a key component of brain development and well-rounded elementary education, yet are often marginalized and ignored. This workshop reviews ways to integrate art and visual learning into teacher education courses.

Teaching Methods or Teachers' Methods?: Developing a Post-Method ESL Teacher Training Program
In this session, the presenter will provide an overview of a unique English as a Second Language teacher training program. Program justification, training approach, population, courses, and certificate and degree pathways will be discussed. Participants will experience a post-method teacher-training activity, preview course materials, and discuss possible implications for their own teacher training programs.

101 Ways to Produce a Highly Qualified Teacher
In order to meet the demand for highly qualified teachers, our program has pursued a number of initiatives. These have included partnering with the local school system to provide professional development to teachers in critical shortage areas, offering an alternative certification program, providing classes in a myriad of formats, pursuing accreditation through the National Association for the Education of Young Children, and seeking grants for students. This presentation will include a discussion of the success of these initiatives, and encourage conversation with others facing the same problems, hopefully unveiling some viable solutions to our common problems.

NSC/WNC: ITV Connection
Learn how a two- and a four-year college, located hundreds of miles apart, developed a partnership allowing rural students to obtain elementary education degrees without traveling.
Using interactive video technology, professors worked closely during recent years to graduate about 30 new teachers.

Enhancing K-6 Math and Science for the Future of STEM
The Tennessee Board of Regents Teacher Preparation (TBR-TP) project is improving preparation of future teachers through collaboration and systemic change. Schools developed a common core of standards-based mathematics and science courses for K-6 teachers, plus an introduction to teaching and technology course. These are now offered at 22 TPR sites.

The Evidence Process: A Collaborative Approach to Understanding and Improving Standards Based Teaching and Learning

Discovering the Future Thorough Lunch, Music, and Literacy
This interactive session presents two innovative strategies used to develop Leeward Community College’s Field Experience program. First, the college hosted a principal’s luncheon to form instant school partnerships; and second, invited those schools to a campus read aloud festival where education students taught environmentally based lessons using music and literacy.

Early Childhood Associate Degree Accreditation: Overcoming Challenges and Using Opportunities
The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) developed its Early Childhood Associate Degree Accreditation system in response to the increasing importance of community colleges and associate degree programs in the early childhood field. In this session, we will discuss the pivotal role of community colleges and associate degree programs in relation to recruiting and retaining qualified, diverse early childhood teachers; the challenges and benefits of articulation; and new developments in state and/or federal policy.

WGU Teachers College - An Innovative Approach to Degree Completion and Teaching Licensure for Working Adults
The Teachers College at Western Governors University (WGU) offers an online, competency based teacher education program ideal for working adults who find it difficult or impossible to attend a traditional university due to work and family situations or rural location. WGU has scholarship money for students desiring to license in math or science education in rural areas (funded by the U.S. Department of Labor). WGU is the only online teacher college that has been awarded NCATE accreditation.
