Martha A. Smith, Ph.D.
President, Anne Arundel Community College


Martha A. Smith, Ph.D., began her tenure as Anne Arundel Community College’s (AACC) fifth president Aug. 1, 1994, focusing on putting Students First. Dr. Smith has been recognized for her leadership, vision and commitment to students and to the community.

Dr. Smith’s influence on national education issues is felt through her membership on several national boards. She was named a charter member of The Education Council of the Manufacturing Institute, the education and research arm of the National Association of Manufacturers in June 2008. She serves on the board of directors of the American Council on Education. Dr. Smith serves on the board of directors of the 800-member League for Innovation in the Community College. She is a charter member of the Educational Testing Service’s National Community College Advisory Council and was named to an additional year on the board of the Institute of Community College Development, where she serves on the Executive Committee. She was re-appointed in 2007 by Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley to serve on the Maryland Education Council and as Maryland representative on the national Education Commission of the States. She serves as a member of the Governor’s Workforce Investment Board. More locally, she was named to the board of the Fort Meade Alliance in spring 2009, joined the board of the Annapolis and Anne Arundel Chamber of Commerce in spring 2007 and is on the executive committee of the Maryland Association of Community Colleges.

Honors include receiving the 2006 District Pacesetter of the Year Award from the National Council for Marketing & Public Relations (NCMPR); Anne Arundel County Tech Council’s 2005 Good Apple Award; Maryland’s Top 100 Women by The Daily Record in 1998, 2000 and 2002; one of Anne Arundel County’s First Women of Education by the YWCA of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County; and the 2001 Community Trustee Award from Leadership Anne Arundel.

She earned a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Chemistry from Slippery Rock State University, a Master of Education in Educational Psychology from University of Hawaii and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Higher Education Administration from University of Northern Colorado. Before becoming AACC president, Dr. Smith was president of Dundalk Community College for seven years.

 
Andrew L. Meyer, Ed.D.
Vice president for learning, Anne Arundel Community College


Andrew L. Meyer, Ed.D., has served as vice president for learning at Anne Arundel Community College since 2000. He is a member of the president’s executive team, an officer of the college and the chief academic officer as well as the chief continuing education officer.

His superior leadership skills have led to national, regional and state awards for programs and faculty in the schools of Arts and Sciences; Business, Computing and Technical Studies; Health Professions, Wellness and Physical Education; Continuing and Professional Studies; and the college’s contract training arm, the Center for Workforce Solutions. He oversees more than 260 full-time faculty and directs a tenure and multiyear contract faculty system.

Meyer has served since 2004 as the institutional representative to the League for Innovation in the Community College and, also during this period, on the Center for Community College Development, Strategic Horizon Network Program. He is a past president of the National Council for Continuing Education and Training (NCCET), an affiliated council of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), and served for ten years as NCCET corporate liaison.

Meyer has served on the Anne Arundel County BRAC Task Force since 2006 and was recently reappointed by the county executive to the Anne Arundel Workforce Development Corporation Board of Directors for a two-year term through 2011. He has served on that board since 2001 as a member and as chair, 2001-02 and 2005-07 and as vice chair from 2008 to the present.

Meyer graduated cum laude and on the dean’s honor list from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education Certification Areas; English as a Second Language and German. He earned a Master of Education degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from the University of Maryland and a Master of Arts degree in Adult and Continuing Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. Meyer earned a Doctor of Education in Adult and Continuing Education from Teachers College, Columbia University, and completed the Institute for the Management of Lifelong Learning at Harvard University.
