At the Community College of Baltimore County, students are placed in classrooms for their practicum to simulate the student teaching experience as closely as possible. Increasing Access to Affordable Teacher Education Programs

The Teachers College at Western Governors University (WGU) was funded by the U.S. Department of Education to provide affordable and accessible teacher licensure programs to working adults and others who need online access. This presentation will provide an overview of licensure programs, costs, admission policies, and related issues for NACCTEP education graduates who may need an online degree program. Scholarships are available for NACCTEP member graduates who enroll in the WGU Teachers College.

Program Course Review: Time to Evaluate

Last year, Lehigh Carbon Community College (LCCC) evaluated its education courses to align with new evidence based practices. Evaluating courses can be a daunting task. To facilitate the review process at LCCC, a Program Course Review tool was created. This tool looks at each course according to six key areas and allows for input from students, instructors, colleagues from other community colleges, and community stakeholders. This session invites participants to bring a syllabus and gain hands-on experience using this innovative tool.

Virtually Enhancing Your Teacher Education Course

Virtual learning environments (VLE) can be used to supplement traditional face-to-face classroom activities. A VLE can be similar to a face-to-face classroom environment in that it allows direct communication with the course instructor and peers. Students are offered the opportunity to share their work with the class. Students can also be split up into groups in order to work with each other and discuss course context topics. Instructors have the ability to share documents and multimedia files directly with students.

The National Association for the Education of Young Children's Commission on Early Childhood Associate Degree Accreditation is now six years old and the first accredited programs will submit reports for accreditation renewal in 2012. This session will focus on helping faculty and administrators understand the renewal process and learning from faculty and administrators how accreditation renewal can be a meaningful process for ongoing program development.

Education Transfer Pathways: Insuring Seamless Transitions for Community College Students

This session will provide information and resources about the transfer pathways that have been developed for education majors by the Maricopa Community Colleges in collaboration with Arizona's public universities. Through these transfer pathway projects, students receive benefits including guaranteed admissions, dedicated advising, and financial incentives as they transition from the community college to the university. Topics include developing the pathways, collaboration, and lessons learned.

Essential Questions Leading the Way to Integrated Learning

What possibilities emerge when essential questions are used to structure a cross disciplinary learning community? How might these questions ground all future teacher-learning? We will explore our successes and challenges within our specific context and engage all participants in crafting questions for their own learning communities and programs as a whole.

Bridging the Gap between High Schools and Four-Year Institutions

Bridging the gap between local high schools and four-year institutions can be very challenging but yet vital in order to ensure a smooth transition from high school to the two-year institution and then on to the four-year institution. Grayson Community College (GCC) articulates with high schools in order for high school courses that meet GCC objectives to be taught by qualified high school educators. Once a student completes an associate degree, they are able to smoothly transition into one of the four-year institutions that has an articulation agreement.

Show Me How: Improving the Field Experience in Foundations Courses

Many teacher preparation programs have a field experience requirement. Some programs have clearly defined outcomes; others are just getting started. Come see the tools and resources Maricopa County Community College District uses to prepare students for the field. Bring electronic files or hard copies to share what your college is doing.

Staying on Track

This workshop focuses on techniques to motivate students to finish their degrees and/or goals for college. Community colleges have traditionally had low retention rates in all programs including education. Individual academic and personal development plans, clear articulations agreements, mentoring, networking, a clear plan of study, extracurricular activities, learning communities, and advising groups are some methods used in community colleges to retain students in programs.

RISK: Raising Intelligent Self-Reliant Kids

The main tenets pushing teacher planning at all grade levels should be wonder and risk. Risk taking is a fundamental pre-requisite for learning. When risk is removed from the classroom, we remove discovery. We should want our students to experience their education. We should want our children to wonder and discover. "I wonder what will happen when I add sugar to potassium nitrate?" As more schools graduate worker bees, we need to change the educational system to encourage the inventor or entrepreneur.
